Remo stopped about a mile into the mangrove preserve. He had been waved through by the U.S. military post, who seemed confused by his lack of cargo. When he tried to explain that he wasn't a drinking man, they were only more confused.

He got out of the SUV alongside the rutted trail that he was assured was the road to the village of the Priestess of the Dawn, although it was unmarked. He got down on his knees and bent low over the front tire, picking at the treads with his fingernails.

There was nothing wrong with the tire; his eyes were actually examining the skyline of mangrove trees. There was a man in a tree about a hundred yards away, dressed in simple brown britches and shirt that seemed to match his skin, and the man was watching Remo. He moved through the trees like a monkey, on all fours, and came to a higher perch to view Remo better.

Finally, Remo stood and stared directly at the man, who became alarmed when he saw he had been spotted. He scampered into the branches like a spider and vanished.

Remo got under way again, thinking about the ugly man in the tree. The little man had moved extraordinarily fast, faster than almost anyone should have been able to move.

The presence of a strange little man in the trees was a bigger problem than Remo wanted to consider. He wanted to leave this place, get back home and check on Chiun. He couldn't stand thinking that Chiun was back home, sick, and he was out here doing busywork.

He had known Chiun for years. There was no one he cared about more on this earth. Remo had known Chiun since being recruited by CURE. Decades ago, when Remo Williams came back from his tour of duty and became a cop, his life seemed on track until he was framed for murder. His trial was rammed through the legal system with unprecedented speed, and he popped out the other end to land in death row. Other inmates languished on death row for years, their fate stalled by legal appeals and protracted legal machinations. It wasn't like that for Remo Williams. Before he knew it, he was being prepped for execution.

Remo didn't understand exactly what had happened him. He only knew he'd been framed for a murder he didn't commit. His fiancee and his friends were gone, and he'd never had a family. There was no support on hand, and the machinery of justice was running at full speed. Remo was resigned to being murdered for a murder he wasn't guilty of.

Then a priest came to offer him comfort on his last day on earth, and told Remo that death could be overcome. All it took was a little pill. This wasn't the same message of resurrection Remo knew so well from the nuns who'd raised him.

Remo took the pill from the priest and, as directed, held it in his mouth as he was strapped into the electric chair.
