I take the dogs for their morning walk, and I use the time to decide my approach to a meeting I have this afternoon.

Carl Simmons finally called and was willing to talk to me, after fending me off all this time. Simmons is the co-CEO with Jim Wolford at Wasserman Equities. I have a much different view of that company than I did when I met Wolford, so I’ll use a different strategy.

I discuss my plans with Tara, who is able to multitask. She can sniff her surroundings and listen to me at the same time. Hunter seems interested as well, because anything Tara does Hunter approves of. Sebastian couldn’t care less; he just wants to get home and go to sleep.

I head home to get ready for a court appearance this morning. Judge Lofton has summoned the lawyers to a hearing, which I’m sure is a result of the story about Gilley that I placed in Vince’s paper. I’m going to get reprimanded; it’s like I’m being sent to the principal’s office.

When I left the house with the dogs, only Laurie was there. That has changed substantially during my absence; Corey and Marcus are now here as well. They all seem to be waiting for me, and they ask me to sit down with them in the den. I do so warily; this is how it must feel to walk into an intervention.

“What’s going on, team?”

“You need to be protected,” Laurie says with uncharacteristic bluntness.

“Just like that? You usually beat around the bush for a while, and we discuss it.”

She nods. “I considered that, but rejected it. It always starts to feel like a negotiation, and this is not negotiable.”

“Just who is it I need to be protected from?” I ask, though I know the answer.

“That’s part of the problem; we don’t know. But you saw what the danger is the other night. I don’t want that to happen to you; the last thing I want to do is have to reenter the dating scene.”

“You’d spend your life vainly searching for someone as good as me.”

“Maybe.”

“Look, I know there are dangerous people involved here, but I don’t see the danger to me. They knew I was coming there to meet Gilley; they could have tried to kill me at the same time.”

Corey says, “This was step one; they were sending you a message. Otherwise Gilley’s body would have been left in the woods, or more likely buried and never found.”

“And the message was to back off,” Laurie says. “But you won’t do that; you can’t do that. So at some point, if you make progress, they are going to decide that you are more trouble than you’re worth.”

“What about if I don’t make progress? That seems to be the direction this is headed.”

“Andy…” She doesn’t have to finish the sentence; the meaning is clear just by the way she says my name. She’s not in the mood to argue.

I’ve run into this situation a number of times, mainly because Laurie has little respect for my self-protection abilities.
