Chapter 13

Maree waved when she spotted Allegra. She’d been waiting for fifteen minutes and as usual Allegra was late.

'Sorry,' Allegra was breathing heavily. At least she had the decency to hurry now. 'My date dropped me off and we were in the parking lot making out for a while.'

Maree sighed. She should have known it was too good to be true that Allegra was puffed out from rushing.

Allegra took a sip of the coffee that Maree had ordered for her and screwed up her face in disgust. 'That’s cold.'

'It was hot fifteen minutes ago.'

Allegra looked chastened. 'Sorry, but honestly how could I resist?' She held up her phone and showed Maree a pic of her new man. 'Look at that dreamy smile.'

Maree rolled her eyes. Allegra always had to have a warm body on the go.

'So give me all the sordid details about you and Tom Calvert,' Allegra said, after she put down her phone.

'There are no sordid details,' Maree said.

'Really? So he just took you home from the club on Saturday and nothing happened?'

Maree maintained eye contact even though she felt her face flush. 'That’s right, nothing happened.'

Allegra narrowed her eyes. 'You’re flushed. That means you’re fibbing.' She tilted her head to the right. 'But you’re able to maintain eye contact which means that you’re telling the truth that nothing happened, so I’m guessing you’re fibbing about something.'

'All right, all right.' Maree gave in. Allegra was like a sniffer dog when she sensed a story. 'He took me back to his place.'

'He did?' Allegra squeezed her arm. 'What was he like? Did he have a lot of stamina?'

'No, I told you, nothing happened.'

'Really?' Allegra’s voice changed and took on a monotone. 'You went home with a hottie like Tom Calvert and nothing happened?'

'No, I mean yes. That’s what I’m saying. Nothing happened.' Maree said. 'I got sick on the way home and he took me to his place, helped me shower and change, and let me sleep.'

'So you slept alone in his bed?' Allegra was sitting up straight, her face screwed up in a quizzical expression.

'Well, no, in his guest bedroom actually.'

Allegra gave a sigh and stirred her cold coffee with the spoon. 'Typical. All the good ones are gay.'

'You think he’s gay?' Maree asked.

'I didn’t until now.'

'But I’d vomited and was really sick. Maybe he was just being considerate by letting me rest.'

'Then he should have taken you home.'

'He said a photographer was following us and he didn’t want him to find out where I lived.'

'When exactly did he say that?' Allegra asked.

'The next day in my office.'

'You haven’t seen him since?'

'We had lunch yesterday.'

'Maybe I’m wrong. If he invited you to lunch, then maybe he isn’t gay.' Allegra straightened up and smiled. 'This is great. It’s just what you need—a rebound guy. Someone hot you can have some fun with, but not take seriously while you get over what’s his face.' Allegra paused, looking at Maree’s expression. 'What’s the matter?'

'Well, he didn’t actually ask me out,' she said.
