Chapter Five

CAROLINA

My heart is pounding in my ears, and I rub my gloved hands together for warmth as we stand in an open field just outside of Independence Springs. It’s Christmas Eve. The morning of the snowman contest.

All that stands between me and my share of the prize pool is four judges and about twenty competitors. After taking in the competition from a friendly distance, I hate to admit it. I’m not feeling as confident as I did two days ago.

I shiver.

Paxton slides an arm around my shoulders and pulls me close, rubbing my arm. “Are you cold already?”

“I’m freezing.” I beam up at him. “I’m glad you gave me some of your long underwear to wear, otherwise I’d probably be hypothermic.”

“Yeah, well, those are on loan. I’ll be taking that long underwear back later. But don’t worry. I promise I’ll be gentle.” He winks, and a jolt of hot lust darts into my belly. “I thought you were from North Dakota.”

“I am.”

“I figured you’d be used to the cold.”

“Once upon a time I would’ve been. But you forget, I’ve been living in L.A. for the past few years.” My teeth chatter. “My blood has gotten thin.”

“How long do you think it would take for your blood to thicken up again?”

“It’s hard to say.” I shake my head. “Maybe a couple of days, maybe a year.”

“It’s a shame we don’t have more time before the contest starts.”

“Why’s that?”

He lowers his lips toward my ear. “I can think of a good way to warm you up.”

His warm breath tickles, and I shiver again. “Well, we’ll definitely have to do that just as soon as we kick some ass.”

“That’s my woman.” He chuckles, his voice low and rumbling from his chest to mine. “Let’s give them hell, and then we can sneak off somewhere and warm up properly.”

I shake my head at him, trying not to pay too much attention to how fast my heart is beating. Especially because I know exactly what—or more precisely who—is responsible for the zing, zing, zing of my heartstrings.

Oh, God. Now I’m quoting old Hollywood musicals when it comes to this man. I definitely have it bad for him.

And . . . I think the feeling is mutual. At the very least, he seems to like being around me more than he did a couple of days ago. He definitely enjoys how well we work together in bed. And on the rug in front of his fireplace. And in the shower this morning before we had to put a stop to the funny business so we could get ready to win this contest.

If you would have told me two days ago that I would be losing my heart to a mountain man, well, I would’ve believed you. But if you told me he would be a real one of flesh and blood instead of a fantasy concocted in my head to pass the time, I would have said you’re crazy.

I wasn’t counting on Paxton.

I’m not sure I’d ever believed I’d find someone I connected with so quickly and completely.
