While the older ladies retreated to the sitting room to enjoy cups of tea and discuss their day, I busied myself with the cleanup. Despite Valâs protests, Art seemed like the most likely suspect. The question was, would telling Gray my suspicions permanently damage the tenuous relationship with my niece?
After so long away from my immediate family, I hadnât realized how much I missed those connections to my blood. Life with Rex had been good for the most part, but it had also been hollow. He was estranged from his family, and I rarely spoke to mine. It had felt like we were adrift in a bubble, floating through life with only each other for company. For a while, that had been enough.
Until Rex needed more.
Now that Iâd returned to the lodge, I couldnât imagine ever letting Magda and Val go. I loved them, deeply and truly, and they were a part of me. Not just because of the secrets we shared, but because we were family. I didnât want to lose that precious sense of belonging.
But I also didnât want to let a murderer walk free after committing such a horrible crime. Tsuâs death had been agonizing. And the fact that there was magic behind it just made everything worse. With a sigh, I put away the last dish and plucked my cell phone out of my purse. I looked out the window over the sink, my face reflected in its glass. I looked better than I had in a long time, thanks to Noel Lodgeâs subtle magic, but the worry in my eyes was impossible to miss.
My finger hovered over Grayâs name in the contact list as I weighed my decision. Stay on Valâs good side and possibly let a murderer go? Or call Gray and tell him to question Art, but damage the relationship with my niece?
In the end, there really was no choice. Iâd have to deal with the fallout as best I could and pray I didnât blow up my family.
I pressed Grayâs name and listened to the phone ring.
