Chapter 23

Once we got back to the station, we spent several hours filling out paperwork and being interviewed. It turns out, there’s a lot of red tape involved when a police officer fires their gun, not to mention shoots someone. I also filed a report about the hit and run at the hospital, at Mike’s insistence. After all, I had nothing left to lose. The cat was out of the bag at the hospital. What were they going to do, fire me again? It turns out, the car they’d tried to run me down with had been reported stolen earlier in the day. I vowed if and when the culprits were found, I would not hesitate to press charges. Enough was enough.

Eventually, Mike was called into the captain’s office. I hung out at his desk with his phone, waiting for some word from the hospital about Hunter Thomas. He was still in surgery the last time we checked in, but at least that meant he was still alive. We both very much wanted to talk to him.

When Mike came back twenty minutes later, he wore resignation like an ill-fitting suit.

“What happened?”

“Administrative leave.”

I shot to my feet. My wrapped ankle twinged and threatened to roll, but I held it together. “What? He shot first! He tried to kill us!”

Mike stepped closer and put a hand on my shoulder. “Easy there, Em. This is standard procedure. It’ll only be a few days while they dot the I’s and cross the t’s.”

“We’ve got an active murder investigation. Wait. What about me? Am I—” The horrifying thought of being let go from both of my jobs on the same day flashed through my mind.

“I’m the one that fired the weapon, so . . . just me.” He squeezed my shoulder, which was still a bit sore from my tumble yesterday. I winced, and he quickly removed his hand. “But they’ll be reassigning the Reed case, I’m sure. We can’t just pause that investigation for a few days. The trail will go cold, and the mayor’s still breathing down the chief’s neck.”

“It wasn’t very warm to start with,” I muttered, then sighed. “So I’m going to have to work with someone else? Who?”

“Don’t know. You’ll probably hear about it before I do.” He picked up his phone, glancing at the screen before tucking it in his pocket. “Anyway, I’ve got to head out. If I hear from the hospital, I’ll pass it along. Otherwise, I’ll see you in a few days.”

I watched him until he turned a corner and disappeared from sight, then sat there staring at his desk for a while. Now what? I had limited access to the police department’s computer system, so I logged myself in and pulled up the digital copy of Reed’s case. It was up to date as far as this morning, so I updated it with what we’d learned from Prince Charming. Then I put a call in to the hospital to check on Hunter Thomas. While I
