NINETEEN
He was parked down the street where he could watch the vehicles as they arrived. Heâd been periodically driving through the neighborhood all day to see if anyone had noticed the old lady was missing. Each time heâd found the house deserted, disappointment set in. On his way home from work he thought heâd try one more time before he called it a day.
This time a fancy black SUV was parked in the driveway. His excitement mounted, but he concentrated on keeping his vehicle at a regular pace as he passed by. Two heads were visible, a man and a woman. When he got to the stop sign he watched through his rearview mirror. The passenger side door opened and with it the overhead light.
âHoly shit, itâs the queen bitch, Merrybell!â
His heart danced.
He let his vehicle idle as he watched her in his mirror. She was standing on the neighborâs porch. Suddenly she stared right at him. Startled he slipped down in his seat. Then he laughed at his stupidity. She couldnât see him that far away. In fact, he doubted she could even recognize his car by the brake lights.
To be on the safe side, he turned right and drove around the block. This time when he pulled up the street, he cut the headlights and coasted until he was about four houses away, far from any streetlights. Her back was to him when he parked on the opposite side of the street and killed the engine.
He slid down in his seat with his eyes just above the dashboard. A really big man stood in Truvyâs yard. Merrybell met him and proceeded up the stairs. The bitch walked really slow; heâd hurt her last night after all. They disappeared into the house. He wondered if theyâd give the bedroom a really good search.
Heâd know if the sheriff pulled up. He relished the idea of watching the cops chase their tails. Tomorrow there would be talk all over town: Truvyâs missing. Did the big bad serial killer get her? He just loved the title: serial killer. That was him. He had the entire town afraid of him.
Make that the whole country. All the news shows were talking about him. Heâd been compared to The Green River Killer and The Long Island Serial Killer. He even had his own name, The GWJ Killer. The reporters were too lazy to say The George Washington Jefferson Killer, which was okay with him because no matter how they said it, he was fucking famous.
Every chance he got, he logged onto his computer and did a Google search to see what was being said. He watched all the news coverage he could find. Then an idea hit him. What if he could watch the cops work his crime scenes? âShit, why hadnât I thought of this before? Itâs brilliant!â
All he had to do was buy a bunch of those tiny cameras to hide and then link them to his computer. âHoly shit, then I can see their faces when they first get a look at my beautiful artwork.
