Chapter 15
Am I in the hospital? Hollis tried to look around the room with as much concentration as he could muster, but he felt weak, and lifting his head required great exertion. He soon succumbed to the heaviness of his head and rested it back down.
Hollis listened to the sounds around him, unsure of so much.
âHeâs awake again!â Levi called out from across the room.
A nurse came into view and briefly stood over Hollisâs hospital bed. Then she was gone from view.
Levi spoke again; this time his voice seemed closer. âSerafina should be here any minute. I called her when you woke up about an hour ago.â
Hollis tried to respond, but it was as if his mouth was stuffed with cotton, making it challenging to form words let alone have them come out coherently. Mostly what came out were sounds of groaning and wincing with every effort he made to get comfortable. His body ached, and there was a dull, throbbing pain emanating throughout his whole upper torso.
The nurse came into focus again. âIâll get you something for the pain in a moment. But letâs just see if we canât make you a little more comfortable by fixing this pillow here.â She began adjusting his pillow and repositioning Hollis in the hospital bed. Then she went over to the machines that were monitoring his vitals. It was quiet in the room for those few minutes.
A familiar female voice came from the roomâs entrance. âHowâs he doing? I got here as quickly as I could.â Serafina.
Serafina came up to Hollisâs bedside and held his hand in hersâa first for them. It felt oddly natural. He could see her beautiful face, concerned and exhausted, her eyes starting to tear up, and all he wanted to do in that moment was console her. He patted the top of her hand with his, letting her know everything was okay, which only made her tear up more.
âHey,â Serafina said with a shaky voice and a steady flow of tears filling her eyes. âYou had us worried.â She unlatched her right hand just as a few tears began their descent to her chin. âYou had me worried.â She wiped away those tears and the others forming out of the corner of her eyes.
Hollis squeezed her hand and started to tear up too.
The nurse finished monitoring his vitals and turned to those in the room. âIâll be back in a moment to administer his pain medication. The sedative will make him drowsy, so he will need to rest again soon.â
After the nurse left the room, Levi said, âI think that was her nice way of telling everyone they will need to leave soon to let Hollis sleep.â
Hollis was okay with that. He was fighting to stay awake and coherent as it was.
âYou need to rest up so you can get better, okay?â Serafina said to which Hollis silently nodded.
The nurse had returned right away with his pain medication and was already pushing it into the tube in his IV with the syringe when he looked up.
