CHAPTER 13

I left work, checked to be sure my gear was in the back, and headed for the Yoga Pod. An hour later, I felt much better and relaxed. Probably too relaxed. Almost home, I realized someone was following me, very close. To be sure, I took a quick left into a neighborhood. The CRV was still behind me. As I drove I used blue tooth and called the police and let them know. The dispatcher assured me she’d advise the nearest police on duty and disconnected.

I took another quick turn and another and until I ended up on the same road I started out on, turning in the wrong direction. The car was still behind me, though not as close. I called Rick’s phone, hoping he was working.

“Stacie?”

“Someone’s following me and I’ve changed direction. I called dispatch…”

“Hold on. It’s coming in now, but no location. Where are you?”

I gave him the cross streets and explained, “I’m heading in the direction of Rockies rather than home.” Rockies was on a main street in Beckman Springs, not too far from where I was.

“Okay. Keep going in that direction. We should catch up with you in about five minutes.”

He disconnected and I shook my head. I kept my speed steady and alternated between checking side and rear mirrors. I was one block from Rockies when my phone rang. Rick.

“White CRV the one following you?”

“Yup.”

“Keep going and pull into the parking lot at Half-Priced Books. Lots of room to park there. Marina and Reardon should be there waiting for you.” He disconnected before I could answer.

I pulled in and parked. As Rick suggested, there were not many cars in the lot. Marina tapped on my window.

“You okay, Stacie? Who’d you make mad this time?”

“I’m okay. No clue. I didn’t notice the car when I drove to Yoga Pod. I noticed when the car barely made it across a light and was following a little too close. Some people think I drive slow. But that wouldn’t explain the car following me when I turned.”

Marina put her hand up like a stop signal and looked over my car to Reardon. Then she shook her head.

“The doofus ran a red light and they lost him. At least they got a partial plate. And here they are.”

Rick and Lahomes arrived and I could see the frustration on Rick’s face. He joined Marina at my door.

“Sorry. We lost him. You okay?”

“Yes. Thanks to all of you. I just want to go home.”

He nodded and Marina took charge. “We’ll follow Stacie home. You and Lahomes check the area in case he circles back, okay?”

He nodded again and with a “Be safe, Stacie,” he was back in his car and they drove off. Marina and Reardon pulled up behind me as I approached the exit. No CRV in sight. I didn’t relax until I arrived at home. Marina and Reardon waited until I was inside before they took off.

I was beyond hungry and so was Jasper. I fed him, had a bowl of rocky road ice cream, and checked the security system several times.
