“I’m a firm believer that you gotta like what you do. The minute it starts to feel like a burden, you need to step back and reevaluate,” Xan said, his voice carrying over “Let It Snow” by Boyz II Men playing in the background.

I sighed and nodded. “I know. My job used to be fun, but the more accolades I get, the more hate, and sometimes I just feel it’s not worth it.”

The soft glow of Christmas lights illuminated the living room as the aroma of delicious cookies filled the air. Finally, the last batch of cookies was done, and we were allowing them to cool before decorating. As promised, while we were waiting, I warmed up the dinner I prepared at my brother’s house before coming over. After he teased me for a few minutes on whether I cooked the food or ordered takeout, we said grace and indulged in Naija fried rice, plantains, and baked chicken.

When I arrived in Luxe Noir, I envisioned eating, sleeping, and lounging around the house and maybe a little exploration of the town. Basically, doing nothing. That had been the plan, but wasn’t the case so far. Not only was I busy every day, but I was also really enjoying doing something without undue pressure and expectations.

I mean Xan, who I now knew was Xander, and I were equally competitive and wanted to win. However, hanging out with him was also fun. He was caring, compassionate, always attentive to my moods, and funny. From this house and the way he spent money, I didn’t have to ask to know he lived very comfortably. At first, when he said he worked in the sports industry, I was scared that he was an athlete. But I knew how Americans were about their sports stars. If he was one, someone would’ve recognized him. Not only did people not seem to know who he was, but they barely paid us any attention when we went out. And we had been hanging out a lot. That was another thing we seemed to share—keeping a low profile.

Once he got to know who I was, I wondered if it would make him back away. Not everyone had the stomach to deal with fame and sometimes unwanted attention. I loved my fans; they made me who I am, but sometimes, I wanted to just be Abi. Since there was a possibility that he would run in the opposite direction when he knew what came with me, rather than dismiss this chance to hang out with him, I chose to go with the flow of the holiday season and take pleasure in being with him.

That’s why I told him about the conversation I had with Yetty the day before. My single had just gone gold, and she had been contacted by some brands who wanted me as an ambassador, and other managers who wanted me to collab with their artists. While I was ecstatic, the whole thing came with a lot of pressure that I didn’t want to think about at that moment.
