Shopping for additional supplies

Although you can find a lot in your own backyard, candles don’t grow on trees. So if you need to stock up on holiday candles, candleholders, or other supplies that you’d rather not create, shop early. As the time for Thanksgiving draws near, more and more autumnal items are replaced by their red and green relatives.

Setting aside some time to decorate

In addition to shopping for supplies, you also need to plan to make time to actually do your projects — always overestimate. On Thanksgiving morning, you don’t want to stir pots on the stove while finishing the embossing on your velvet table runner (see Chapter 22), so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy as well as finish the projects you want to start.

Also schedule a day to put your items on display. The week after Halloween is a perfect time to begin setting up your Thanksgiving decorations. If you have everything you need, you should be set to prep and display lovely vignettes in a day or less. See the upcoming section, “Decorating in a Flash,” for even more suggestions.
