But when the phone rang early the next morning, it didn't bring good news. “She hasn't returned.” Luigi sounded desperate. “They took the money and kept Gloria. How mean is that?”

Stefano felt as if someone had punched him straight into the stomach. “Come to the tower,” he finally said. “Carlina and I will go there on foot. We'll meet at the door of the tower.”

In the early morning sun, everything seemed totally different from the night before. In the field, wild flowers were just starting to unfold their petals, turning into the direction of the sun, and everything looked as if it had just come out of the wash, fresh and clean. A bumblebee ambled by, its deep hum loud in the silence of the morning. There was nobody about.

Stefano and Carlina raced up the hill. Breathing heavily, they climbed the steps that led to the massive stone wall of the tower, but once there, they froze. The tower stood firm and solid in front of the glittering blue sea, just like it had been doing for centuries. The wooden door was closed, and right in front of it was a black sports bag.

“Luigi's bag,” Carlina whispered.

“It is still here. Maledizione.”

They heard steps behind them, and Luigi came panting up. He saw the bag and yelped. “Oh no, oh no! They didn't even take the money!” Before they could stop him, he ran to the bag and pulled it open. Bundles of cash fell out. “It's all still here. Every single Euro. It was no use at all.” He sat down and started to weep.

Carlina ran to him and hugged him, but she couldn't find any encouraging words. Helpless, she looked up at Stefano. “The transfer didn't work.”

“Yes. The communication seems to have broken down on all levels.” With a frown, he stared at the bag, but it seemed as if he didn't see it at all. Suddenly, he crouched down and looked at his uncle. “Luigi, could it be that Maristella was the kidnapper?”
