Chapter 12

“Do you remember Tabitha talking to her father last night at all?” I asked Gunther, my voice low so the group walking toward the entrance to Il Pirata wouldn’t hear. “I remember her yelling at him when the information about Raven first came out, but I don’t think I saw them talk ever again.”

“No, he just sat on the side of the room, Melissa whispering away at him,” Gunther said as we paused by the truck. He was frowning as he watched Tabitha and Bob, Bob’s muscled arm casually resting on the small of her back. “Have you made up your mind about her?”

“Who?”

“Tabitha,” Gunther lifted his chin in the pair's direction, Kyle beside them glancing back at us. The centaur was sticking close to the questionable couple, closer than he ordinarily would if Bob was escorting someone. “Do you think she’s part of this?”

“I think everybody is part of this,” I said carefully, all the convoluted information passing through my mind. “The paranormal world and the human one. The Witches’ Council. The human coven. Our circus.”

“As it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel,” he muttered as his gaze sharpened and settled on Tabitha. I chuckled softly. “What? Did I say something?”

“We say ‘wheels within wheels’ now.”

“The human testament book expresses it more poetically.”

“That’s probably true, but it’s old. That’s why they call it the Old Testament.”

“You’re not answering the question,” Gunther observed as he grasped my hand to draw me into his arms. “You seem tired, love.” Shivering despite the pleasant morning sunlight, I sighed. I’d never tire of hearing him call me that. It was like something out of a storybook. “How are you managing?”

“I’m concerned about Samson. I’m confused about what, exactly, is going on here. I’m tired,” I admitted as I relaxed my head on his shoulder. “But I’m glad you’re here. I think you’re keeping me sane.”

He drew his head back to look at me. “Oh? How so?”

“Just by being here.”

He grinned. “That’s nice of you to say, love.” Gunther kissed the tip of my nose with a slight clink.

“I don’t know, it’s strange,” I said as we remained together in the parking lot. “I feel like I should freak out. When did the Witches’ Council showing up just become, like, an ordinary thing? Being glamoured, not being able to trust my own eyes, my own impressions. When did that become routine?”

Gunther took a minute before he responded, but when he spoke, his observation had a ring of truth that made me uncomfortable. “Perhaps you’re finally one of us. Maybe it’s taken all this time for you to trust what our world is.”

If he was right, the world was now shifting sands of deception punctuated by full-on attacks. No amount of cotton candy and circus peanuts could put a shine on that reality.

“You and I were going to change the world,” I said, pulling back and thinking about our plans to overthrow the Witches’ Council, remake the paranormal world into a kinder, more democratic one.
