Lay Day

It was very pleasant to have Cal aboard Jollymore. He was easy-going and much more open to doing things than Albert. After two days of racing, there was a one day break. Those who wished, could attend a day-long event, called Lay Day, held at the Antigua Yacht Club. Albert was not interested, so Cal and I took a commercial dinghy ashore to check it out. I paid the nominal entrance fee and we wandered around and enjoyed watching some very serious partying. Booths had been set up for selling hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches. There was a fully equipped bar and plenty of beer, the drink of choice. The games included: tug of war at the water’s edge, so that the losing team ended up falling in; rubber raft races with much cheating; a beer drinking contest with contestants who didn’t need any more beer; a three legged race with pushing and tripping and finally, the limbo. The games until then had been quite rough and tumble, wild fun, and were mostly played by young men. The limbo was different, and the apparent winner was a lithe and attractive young woman. But then Cal entered the contest and he was amazing to watch. He bent over backwards, until he was barely one foot off the ground and still could move, step by step, under the pole. He won two tickets for dinner at the Galley Restaurant, quite a lovely prize. Cal graciously invited me to share his good fortune.

Late that afternoon, we returned to Jollymore and told Albert of our day’s adventures and our plans for dinner; he was not pleased. He felt that since Cal had been staying on his boat, he should have been the one invited to dinner. He was probably right and if we had been smarter we would have avoided the disaster that followed. He was most upset and vocal about his displeasure, not wanting anything more to do with us, so Cal and I decided to leave him there and went ashore for our dinner. When we came back later, Albert was drunk and had trashed his boat. He had broken jars of food on the cabin floor and loaded the space up with all kinds of trash. When Albert saw us, he untied his dinghy and went off into the night doing wheelies and narrowly missing nearby yachts. His behavior was a surprise, for he normally drank very little and never on the boat. Cal and I set about cleaning up the mess and I tried to decide what I would do next. That was it with Albert! First he told me how he had put a couple off his boat, even after they had helped him sail across the Atlantic, a big red flag. The second red flag was his show of childish temper after his navigational error, and now this. Cal had to stay on Jollymore, because he still had two days of racing with Albert as crew on Stormy Weather.
