Just as French was the language of court in many countries across Europe, so French tastes in fashion, style, art and architecture dominated from the Middle Ages. If an official royal mistress was de rigueur in Paris, then an official royal mistress was deemed essential for any reigning monarch who wanted to be taken seriously.

This was true across the continent, although for some of the German princes it seemed more a matter of form than practice. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the elector of Brandenburg, Frederick III, had a suitably beautiful and aristocratic mistress who was well rewarded with gifts of jewellery. Frederick was appalled by the notion of adultery, however, and loved his wife far too much ever to be unfaithful to her.

When the elector of Hanover became George I of Great Britain in 1714, he brought two royal mistresses with him to court. But they failed to impress and became the subject of great ridicule, as one was short and fat, the other tall and thin, and both were considered ugly.
