One of the greatest examples of his artistry and anatomical mastery can be found in one of the atlases he produced, Demonstrationum Anatomicopathologicarium Liber Primus Brachii Humani Fabricam et Morbos, in 1760 (Figure 3.81). This 22‐page atlas comprised three chapters, on the skin, the muscles and joints, and the nerves and blood vessels. It was renowned for its pioneering understanding of the chiasma tendium, a structure formed by the intersection of the flexor digitorum profundus tendons and the flexor superficialis tendons, which is considered to be the key element in the gripping action of the hand, where the two contralateral slips of the flexor digitorum superficialis pass around and compress the flexor digitorum profundus. Furthermore, the atlas illustrated Camper's comprehension that muscle is surrounded by a membranous sheath of fascia. He could identify and treat dislocations of the shoulder and rotator cuff with the aid of his atlas, although he believed that skin itself never completely healed if damaged.
