Major General Philip Kearny (1814–62) Special Lot S-8

Born in New York City, Kearny graduated from Columbia University in 1833. When he inherited a million dollars from his grandfather in 1836, he immediately took up a military career, his dream since childhood. An accomplished horseman, he joined his uncle’s regiment, the First U.S. Dragoons, in 1837, attended the training school for French cavalry at Saumur in 1839, saw action with the French in Algiers in 1840, and returned to the United States, serving as an aide to generals Alexander Macomb and Winfield Scott. He served in the Mexican-American War, where he lost an arm. He was killed after the second Manassas campaign near Chantilly, Virginia, when he rode into the Confederate lines. His body was taken to General A. P. Hill, who declared, “Poor Kearny, he deserved a better death than that.” His grave is marked by one of only two equestrian statues at Arlington, a gift of the people of the state of New Jersey in 1914.
