BEST FEATURE: Her serious wit.
Parker was as cute as a button and hysterical to boot. She had the guts to leave her estate to Martin Luther King Jr., well before he was universally respected (see sidebar). Her sense of humor was her greatest asset, but she was also stylish, with a naturally tiny figure and large and lovely hazel eyes. Though she was always at the ready with a quip and a laugh, Parker was rarely photographed smiling, but occasionally instead cocked one dark, strong brow. No one escaped her examination, and few could resist her charm—dangerous as it was to be around. “Wit has truth in it,” she once said. “Wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words.”
