COSMIC COWBOYS AND CHICKEN FRIED STEAK

In 1933, Kenneth Threadgill bought a Gulf filling station on North Lamar Boulevard, the city’s main thoroughfare, and was the proud possessor of the first beer license in Travis County, post-prohibition. For forty years, save for a few years during World War II when it was closed, Threadgill’s Tavern was a gathering place for folks looking to throw some dice, jam with fellow musicians or just hang out and have a few drinks. Threadgill’s served as an important proving ground for the ascendant counterculture in the 1960s, attracting hippies and old-school rednecks alike to Wednesday night hootenannies. The assembled weekly crowds also bore witness to Janis Joplin cultivating her musical persona, evolving from a shy hippie strumming an autoharp and coughing out Joan Baez songs to a full-blown blues icon. It was at Threadgill’s that Austin’s reputation as an incubator for innovative and exciting bands took root.
