Chapter Sixteen

Katie took a deep breath of crisp morning air as she made her way to the zoo, her steps filled with a mix of anticipation and unease. Tom was waiting for her there, and she hoped that their conversation would shed light on the dark path that lay before her.

As she entered the familiar gates, the symphony of nature greeted her ears—the chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the distant roar of exotic creatures. The air was thick with the earthy scent of foliage, transporting her to a realm where wild and untamed beauty coexisted.

Tom, his tall figure framed against the backdrop of enclosures, turned to face her, a mix of concern and curiosity etched upon his features. Katie's heart skipped a beat at the sight of him, his handsome presence a comforting anchor amidst her roiling emotions.

Approaching him, she reached out to grasp his hand. He smiled at her, wiping sweat off his brow with his other one as he spoke.

“What are you doing here, all bright-eyed and bushy tailed at 8 a.m.? I wasn’t expecting to see you till later.”

Her voice trembled as she spoke, despite her efforts to stay calm."Tom, I need to talk to you about what I learned from Meera Singh," she began, her words laced with a sense of urgency. "I might be at the center of this dark witch ordeal, and I'm scared for your safety."

Tom's eyes, usually filled with a mischievous glimmer, darkened with concern as he absorbed Katie's words. He took a deep breath, his voice steady and resolute. "Katie, if someone is after you, they probably already know about me," he stated, his words carrying a quiet strength. "Besides, I have no intention of running away. I’m in this for the long haul…You know that.”

Katie's heart swelled with gratitude, her gaze locked with Tom's. In that moment, she realized once again how fortunate she was to have found someone who stood unwavering by her side, a pillar of support amidst the chaos that surrounded both of them.

With a soft smile, she reached into her pocket, retrieving a small, intricately carved rune. Its protective energy hummed beneath her touch as she offered it to Tom. "Take this," she said, her voice filled with a mix of affection and determination.

“What is this?” Tom asked, turning the intricate carving around in his fingers. His eyes lit up with interest as he again met Katie’s concerned gaze.

"It's a symbol of my feelings for you, and a reminder that we are bound together. I want you to be safe."

Tom accepted the rune, his fingers tracing its delicate patterns. He looked at Katie, his eyes filled with a depth of emotion that words could not express. "Thank you, Katie," he whispered, his voice tinged with a mix of gratitude and devotion. "I'll take it with me wherever I go."

As Katie and Tom stood in the tranquil embrace of the zoo, a woman in a crisp zoo uniform approached them with a warm smile. Tom's voice was filled with pride as he introduced her to Katie.
