Dane

Logan’s birthday is tomorrow, and Julian and I have the perfect gift in mind for her. It’s starts with whisking her off in the private jet, to Naples, Italy where we dine at an elegant rooftop restaurant overlooking the panoramic gulf. Logan doesn’t once complain about Julian tagging along, the whole flight over she’s generous of spirit and laughs easily at Julian’s silly jokes. I’m thrilled that they’re getting on so well. Even the sweet nothings she whispers to Julian, believing he’s me, when he makes love to her, only means he’s pleasing her well, making her feel loved and cherished. And rightly so as our arrangement was never designed to do anything but bind the three of us while uplifting, honoring and pleasing Logan.

If only Logan could incorporate this concept into her moral code, we could open up to her and tell her everything…

We’re all feeling pretty toasty from wickedly good wine and gourmet food, the warm ocean breeze charges the atmosphere with something magical. I’m sitting next to Logan, my arm resting on the back of her chair and Julian sits across from us. It feels like one of those balmy nights when almost anything could happen…

It’s at this time, we decide to present Logan with our true birthday gift. I remove the envelope from my suit coat and slide it over to her.

She blinks at it and grins before picking it up. “Okaaay, what is this?”

“There’s only one way to find out, love,” I say, giving her shoulder a squeeze and winking at Julian.

Logan opens it cautiously and reads the card inside. Her expression falls as she reads it again and then looks up at us in alarm. “Is this what I think it is…you’re giving me 33% ownership of JD Berganhoff?”

She’s looking directly at me, but I rock my thumb towards Julian too. “We both gave up a third of our stake, so that now, each of us owns a third of the company.” I shrug. “You’re an equal partner, Logan.” I look at Julian “Maybe we should rename the firm JD Berganhoff.”

Julian grins. “I like the sound of that, very nice ring to it.”

Logan’s brow pinches tightly. “Wait, you guys. This is your company, you built it. You can’t just make me a full partner. Especially you, Julian. I mean Dane giving me part of his share is one thing because he’s my husband, but you?” She shakes her head and pushes the envelope away. “This is incredibly sweet and generous beyond belief but I couldn’t possibly…”

“Couldn’t possibly what?” I ask, my warm buzz is quickly fading.

“Accept this,” she holds up the envelope. “It’s too much.”

It feels like a stiff blow to the gut, like the gift is a proxy for our arrangement. She’s saying she can’t accept us. “Says who? It’s our company, you’re my wife, if we wish to make you a full partner, why would you refuse?”

“Because it’s Julian’s legacy too,” she says looking at him. “This gift belongs to his future bride, it’s something he’ll want to hand down to his children, someday.
