Chapter Six

One month later

* * *

Matthew stood in the doorway to the saloon, wondering if he was making another mistake.

Because it’d been a mistake to come to this brothel last time, of that he had no doubt. Because it was supposed to have been an evening with Miss Gold. One night where he could be a man—not a widow, not a father, not a cripple. Just a man.

That night in her arms had haunted him for the last month. Goldie was with him when he was working cattle, tempting him when he made dinner for Jed and haunting his dreams when he finally fell into bed at the end of another exhausting day.

He flexed his foot—something he was still getting used to doing. When he’d run out of that fancy oil she’d given him, he resorted to using bacon grease—but it was worth it. Even after a long day, his pain was significantly less and he had her to thank for that, too.

Not that she would even remember him. A month was a long time, especially when she probably took two or three men to her bed every night. If she were even still here. There was always a chance she could have moved on and if she had…

Well. If she had, then he’d be able to save his money. He’d sold off a few extra cows he hadn’t planned on to afford this trip down to Brimstone and he didn’t want to waste his money. He only wanted Goldie.

The saloon was crowded tonight and at first, he didn’t see her. But then, just when he was about to despair, she lifted her head. She was hanging over the back of a poker player, her arms around his neck and her breasts pressed against his shoulder. Something had changed about her, Matthew could tell. She wasn’t hiding in the corner anymore. For some ridiculous reason, that saddened him.

Then she saw him. For the longest second, they just stared at each other and Matthew knew he had made a fool of himself because either she didn’t remember him or she wasn’t glad to see him. He didn’t know which one would be worse

Slowly, she straightened, pulling away from the gambler. Then everything changed all at once. She clasped her hand in front of her and the biggest smile broke out over her face. He couldn’t hear her, but he saw her lips move and he hoped like hell she was saying his name.

And then she was running toward him, laughing and crying “Matthew!” and this time he heard her, loud and clear. As she made her way around the tables and the gamblers and the other soiled doves. She ran right to him and threw her arms around his neck and said, “Oh, Matthew, you came back,” and damned if Matthew didn’t hear a hitch in her voice, as if she were trying not to cry.

He picked her up and slung her around, savoring the feel of her in his arms again.
