Chapter 7

“A little further, Burton. Take you time getting into bed and I will prop your leg up with some pillows.” Will said to Burton. Will had been his closest friend since Burton first showed up to football practice.

“Oh, thank you. I appreciate your help. I think I am comfortable.” Burton groaned as he laid back and looked up at the ceiling. His cast went from his ankle to his waist.

“You sure, Burr? We both know these dormitory beds are not comfortable. I don’t want to leave unless I know you are OK.” Will said.

“Of course. I’m not as much in pain right now,” Burton said, wincing while fluffing his pillows and laying his head down. “I never thought I would break my femur and get a concussion on the same play.”

A few of Burton’s teammates came into the room and stood next to his bed.

“Don’t worry, man; you’ll be back on the football field before you know it. Krieger doesn’t play the way you do but he’ll be there, listening to you coaching him from the sidelines.” They all shook his hand one by one, as they left him in his room, shutting the door behind them.

Will stopped by the door and looked back at Burton on the bed. “You sure you are OK?”

“Yeah, I guess,” Burton mumbled as he stared up at the ceiling, knowing life was pretty much over. His scholarship was doomed and so was his playing career. The doctors put a rod in his leg and he knew they would never clear him to play again. He had seen this happen to a friend in high school and he never picked up a football again.

The room was still. He was alone and the ache in his right thigh throbbed. Burton felt as a human anvil getting whacked with a sledgehammer. He flinched at the beat of the agony, his entire body felt as if he’d been run over by a monster truck.

Trying to move on his side, the twisting of battered body parts burped up with an audible yelp. As the pulse of the pain struck him, he noticed the old clock on his desk was shaking. It was acting the same as a heart rate monitor. The needle was trembling each time he did. It was as if it were hearing him. Burton tried relaxing, breathing deep breaths and the discomfort started to lessen. He looked over and the clock had stopped working.

“Stupid clock. It is as broken and worthless as my leg and football career hopes,” Burton muttered, breaking the silence. He rolled back onto his back and fell asleep. The destruction of his leg was burdening him beyond comprehension. He just wanted the pain to end, instead of his future. For the first time, Burton longed to be home and ten years old again. Do I really love football? He asked himself for the first time. I don’t even know what I want to be in life. Frustrated, Burton closed his eyes and tried to go back in time to when he was younger.
