Tom had found a cheap apartment. Cheap by California standards, meaning Emilyâs portion of the rent for something smaller and outdated would be the same as she paid now. She tried not to focus on the negative as she packed. Instead she visualized all the auditions she would go on living in the center of the movie business.
The doorbell rang and Sarah answered it. Emily tensed when she heard Philipâs voice in the background. A moment later, he was standing in her doorway. He smiled at her, and her heart pounded in her chest.
âCome to say goodbye?â Emily asked.
âNo.â
Emily was confused. She was about to ask what he came for when he said, âI came to ask you to stay.â
Philip shut the door behind him. He walked to the bed, sat down and gazed at her with soulful eyes. âI donât want you to leave.â
Emily was speechless. She stared at him in disbelief. Heat rushed through her body, making her unable to think.
âI have to leave,â she stammered. âIâve already agreed to rent an apartment. I gave notice at the restaurant.â
Philip stood. They were face to face. So close she could smell his cologne.
He looked into her eyes. âI canât let you go.â
Emilyâs stomach did a somersault, and she started to tremble.
âDonât do this. Please donât do this.â
âDo what?â he asked softly.
âTorment me.â
She gave him a hurt look, and he reached out and caressed her cheek. âI need you,â he said. âIs that so terrible?â
Emily couldnât believe her ears. She pulled away, tears welling in her eyes. âYou donât need me. You can find someone else to pretend to be your girlfriend.â
âI donât work there anymore, so I donât have to worry about that.â
Emily held his gaze, a worried look on her face. âWhat happened? Did you get fired? Did you quit?â
âThey told me to take time off, so I did, and after giving it a lot of thought, came to the conclusion Iâd rather start my own business.â
âGood,â Emily said. âYou donât have to play their games then. You can be in charge, and you and Jason can live like a normal couple.â
âJason and I broke up.â
Another surprise. Sarah hadnât told her that.
Philip stepped closer. âI want you to be my girlfriend.â
Emily had fantasized about him saying those words, had wished for it on her star even, but now that he was standing in front of her and saying them, it seemed silly.
âWhy would you want that?â she asked, his request not making sense.
âBecause Iâm in love with you.â
Emily gulped. Her knees were weak, and she felt faint.
âIâm confused,â she said. âDoes this mean youâre suddenly straight?â
Philip smiled. âNo. Iâm still gay, but I want to be with you.â
Emily sat on the bed, and Philip sat next to her. She turned to him. âYouâre not attracted to other women?â
âNo. Just you.â
She tried to make sense of what he was saying. âBut youâre still attracted to men?â
âYes,â he admitted. âI am.â
Her mind went into overdrive. âThen how can this work?â she asked.
