Tom had found a cheap apartment. Cheap by California standards, meaning Emily’s portion of the rent for something smaller and outdated would be the same as she paid now. She tried not to focus on the negative as she packed. Instead she visualized all the auditions she would go on living in the center of the movie business.

The doorbell rang and Sarah answered it. Emily tensed when she heard Philip’s voice in the background. A moment later, he was standing in her doorway. He smiled at her, and her heart pounded in her chest.

“Come to say goodbye?” Emily asked.

“No.”

Emily was confused. She was about to ask what he came for when he said, “I came to ask you to stay.”

Philip shut the door behind him. He walked to the bed, sat down and gazed at her with soulful eyes. “I don’t want you to leave.”

Emily was speechless. She stared at him in disbelief. Heat rushed through her body, making her unable to think.

“I have to leave,” she stammered. “I’ve already agreed to rent an apartment. I gave notice at the restaurant.”

Philip stood. They were face to face. So close she could smell his cologne.

He looked into her eyes. “I can’t let you go.”

Emily’s stomach did a somersault, and she started to tremble.

“Don’t do this. Please don’t do this.”

“Do what?” he asked softly.

“Torment me.”

She gave him a hurt look, and he reached out and caressed her cheek. “I need you,” he said. “Is that so terrible?”

Emily couldn’t believe her ears. She pulled away, tears welling in her eyes. “You don’t need me. You can find someone else to pretend to be your girlfriend.”

“I don’t work there anymore, so I don’t have to worry about that.”

Emily held his gaze, a worried look on her face. “What happened? Did you get fired? Did you quit?”

“They told me to take time off, so I did, and after giving it a lot of thought, came to the conclusion I’d rather start my own business.”

“Good,” Emily said. “You don’t have to play their games then. You can be in charge, and you and Jason can live like a normal couple.”

“Jason and I broke up.”

Another surprise. Sarah hadn’t told her that.

Philip stepped closer. “I want you to be my girlfriend.”

Emily had fantasized about him saying those words, had wished for it on her star even, but now that he was standing in front of her and saying them, it seemed silly.

“Why would you want that?” she asked, his request not making sense.

“Because I’m in love with you.”

Emily gulped. Her knees were weak, and she felt faint.

“I’m confused,” she said. “Does this mean you’re suddenly straight?”

Philip smiled. “No. I’m still gay, but I want to be with you.”

Emily sat on the bed, and Philip sat next to her. She turned to him. “You’re not attracted to other women?”

“No. Just you.”

She tried to make sense of what he was saying. “But you’re still attracted to men?”

“Yes,” he admitted. “I am.”

Her mind went into overdrive. “Then how can this work?” she asked.
