Chapter Sixteen
Bewilderment was not something Toby had a lot of experience with, but since meeting Lucy Barton, he almost felt like he was on a first-name basis with the emotion. Usually it was a good thing, making him realise the things he craved in life were not only possible but very much within his grasp.
But not now. Because Lucy was glaring at him with the force of a thousand suns and looked like she was about to explode.
âFuck you!â Her voice shook with rage, her words stained with hurt.
What the fuck?
This was why he liked plants.
They didnât have messy emotions. Or talk. Or swear at him for no apparent reason. Why was she so upset? And how did he make it stop so they could get back to the place where she was smiling and he wasnât feeling like a gigantic, clueless arsehole?
He clenched his jaw and stared at Lucy as his brain cycled through their conversation until, like a low-hanging branch, realisation slapped him in the face.
âYou didnât want anyone to see me.â
Suddenly understanding how that must have sounded to a woman who was used to people brazenly calling her ugly in public, he winced at his own stupidity.
Then leapt to his feet to stop the understandably irate woman from storming out of his office.
Toby wrapped his arms around Lucyâs waist and yanked her away from the door. âBaby, I didnât mean it like that. When I said I didnât want anyone to see you, I just meantââ
âWhat?â She struggled against his hold, but he refused to let her go, even when she swung her elbow and caught him in the ribs, causing a pained grunt to burst from his lips. His woman was fierce.
But so was he. âThe way you were dressed.â
âThe way I was dressed?â The venom in her voice wouldâve made a lesser manâs balls shrink to the size of raisins. âI was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, you pompous arse.â
Somehow, he managed to spin her around so she was facing him, then gripped her wrists in one hand and pinned them to the door above her head. His lips pressed together in a thin line of frustration, but he kept his voice even, his tone low. âNo way in hell was I letting you get into a car driven by Christ only knew who while you were wearing one of my T-shirts and no bra.â
He shoved his other hand through his hair. âEvery time you leaned forwards, even a little, I could see straight down the top of that shirt, right to your goddamn perfect breasts, piercings and all. And I didnât want anyone else to see you like that, didnât want to give them the chance to treat you with disrespect. Especially after the way that little shit-stain spoke to you the other night.â He let out a slow breath and stared her down. âI told you I would put your safety first, and I meant it. I was only trying to protect you, Lucy.
