Chapter Seven

Beckham dressed and waited for Sam. He’d never met a guy so guarded, yet open with his life. Sam questioned so much and hadn’t quite lost the fear in his eyes. Beckham wanted to change that.

He stood in the middle of the master bedroom and waited on Sam.

“Holy shit.” Sam emerged from the closet. “That is no closet. It’s a whole different room. Like a suite.”

He did have a large space for his clothes. “It’s not that big.” God, he was such a liar.

“No?” Sam straightened his shirt. “It’s bigger than my room at Boys Club.”

“So it’s big.” Beckham inspected Sam. For being so slender, he fit into Beckham’s jeans rather well.

“I’ve never seen so many pairs of shoes. Do you really wear them all?” Sam asked.

“I have.” He had over a hundred grand invested in those shoes. “You need the right accessories for each occasion.”

“I guess so.”

He prided himself on his collection of shoes, watches and caps. He possessed hats from every game he’d played in, pristine versions of the hats and game used, plus some from his time in the minors and special editions. His hats marked the times in his life.

He dusted Sam off. “You look stunning.”

“Thanks. Do I want to know how much these jeans cost?”

“Nah.” Of course the price was obscene. He preferred the best and he’d developed expensive tastes. “Ready?”

“Yes.” Sam ventured through the house with him to the garage. “Are you driving?”

“Thought I might today.” He tapped the fob for his Lotus.

“I’ve never seen one of these in person. How did you get one?” Sam asked. “I don’t know if I’m qualified to sit in it.”

“You are.” He laughed as Sam opened the door for him. “I suppose you’ll want one.”

“No.” Sam rounded the hood, then settled on the passenger seat. “I want a Jeep, if we’re talking vehicles.”

He hadn’t expected that answer. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“You don’t have to buy me one.”

He engaged the engine and the roar filled the garage.

“Whoa.” Sam buckled in his seat. “Holy shit.”

“It’s powerful.” He backed out of the garage and headed down the driveway. “I will get you what you want because I can. It’s all part of spoiling you.”

“I’ll never get used to it.”

He might sooner than he realized. Beckham sped to the ballpark. He missed the way the streetlights glittered and the night came alive. He missed the rush of playing under the lights, too.

“Do you wish we were going to your game?” Sam asked.

“I do.”

“Why? Can’t get enough of the game?”

“Pretty much.” He had a baseball tattooed on his ass. That should’ve said everything.

“I wish I were still competing, too. I miss the rush of competition and the thrill of the race.” Sam held out his hand.

He laced his fingers with Sam’s and settled behind the wheel. “I read up on you. You were good.”

“When I was in shape.”

“What do you call what you are now?” He chuckled. “You’re ripped.”

“I’m still running, but I’m not in competition shape. I counted
