CHAPTER ELEVEN
CAT LEANED OVER the balustrade, looking down into the palace foyer where staff bustled, carrying massive flower arrangements and chairs, preparing for tonightâs festivities. The front doors were open and two men unrolled a carpet of royal St Gallan green edged in gold.
She rubbed her hands up her arms as nerves prickled. Already her hair was up in a style that looked frighteningly regal. When sheâd looked in the mirror sheâd seen a stranger. How would she look after a session with the make-up artist and wearing the amazing dress, made to measure, that had been delivered?
Knowing Alex was at yet another meeting, sheâd aimed to clear her head with a quick walk through the palace galleries. But she felt as muddled as before.
Yesterday Alex had held her close and told her he wanted her. That heâd forgiven her deception and more. So much more. Cat had spent last evening in her room, pleading a headache. It hadnât been much of a lie. Her head had swum and sheâd felt wrung out.
His words, his expression as heâd held her, had made Cat want to surrender to her feelings for him. Feelings she hadnât been able to eradicate, even when heâd hated her.
She felt a foreigner in her own body, her own mind. Romance had been scarce in her world. But that didnât mean she was a pushover.
Yet, even as she thought it, she recalled the expression on Alexâs face, the roughened timbre of his voice as he spoke about needing her. Heâd said this wasnât just sex, despite the thrumming sexual attraction, and sheâd been on the brink of giving him whatever he wanted.
Yet what more could they share? And if it was simply sex, was she ready for such a brief liaison? Could she walk away, heart whole afterwards? She was due to leave tomorrow. She wasnât naïve enough to imagine a king would carry on a long-distance relationship with a bodyguard. He in his palace in northern Europe and she in New York or wherever work took her.
That was without the complication of her true identity. If fairy tales happened and he did want her even then, sooner or later someone would discover her past and reveal the sordid truth for the world to devour over morning coffee.
Cat shivered at the thought. Not merely of facing her past, but of how the scandal might affect Alex and Amelie.
So, all they could offer each other was sex. A steamy liaison for a week in Bengaria if she followed Alex before she took up her next job.
She was so tempted. She told herself she was fascinated by what heâd told her of his peopleâs fierce pride and warm hearts and how, when things looked grim, theyâd pulled together. Under his leadership, Bengaria was now becoming a centre for innovation and investment.
But it wasnât Bengaria that drew her. It was Alex.
Hers was a blood-deep craving.
Cat shook her head and hurried to her room. The sooner sheâ
âThere you are.â Enide was at her door.
