The morning briefing hadn’t been running for long before the call came through. There had been little progress overnight in relation to the first victim, Adam Manners. There were no revelations in his background that warranted further investigation. Much of the investigative work had been fruitless. His social media profiles, his personal life, past relationships and even his computer hardware had revealed nothing.

The only point of interest had come from the door-to-door enquiries. Neighbours either side of the Manners had come forward to report that they had heard a series of blazing rows a few months back. She had thrown his clothes out in tatters, having cut them up. They reported her screaming that she fucking hated him, and he’d ruined everything.

It came as a surprise to the team and put the spotlight back on Jackie Manners. Karen parked the idea of bringing in Jackie for an interview but asked the team to double-check with her doctor to confirm whether she had been experiencing any mental health or emotional issues.

They had just started to discuss Dulani Kalagho, and the outcome of continued forensic investigations which had identified synthetic brown hair fibres on his clothing. But the call had come in that a body had been found in suspicious circumstances and that Karen’s team were needed immediately on the scene. The team dropped everything they were doing and scrambled towards the location.
