“Hey,” I murmur softly, nudging Holly awake.

I should’ve been up and out an hour ago, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to detach myself from her. Once I’m out there, the day begins and there’s no going back. I hear my brothers hyping themselves up outside but it’s when Holly opens her eyes and smiles at me that I gain the strength to face everything destined to come my way today.

“I need to go, and Rayna just woke up.”

She sits up, clutching the sheets to her chest and for a beat, she forgets what went down between us. Her eyes dart to the floor and then to me.

“You say you don’t want me to hide myself from you, but we both know all we do is hide together in the dark.”

I choke down her words and have nothing to say back. We both get up and as she goes to deal with Rayna, I quickly shower and get dressed. I meet them down in the kitchen and place a quick kiss on the top of my daughter’s head.

“You won’t be able to reach me today, but you’ll have my mom here if you need anything.”

“Sure.”

Grabbing my smokes and the lighter, I head out. Dad is the first to approach me.

“Everyone’s ready to go,” he tells me.

Looking him up and down, he doesn’t look ready to leave. Catching me, he says, “I’m gonna hang back.”

“Don’t you want to be there, make sure everything goes without a hitch?” I ask.

“It’s not my job to make sure it goes well anymore, it’s yours. I have full faith in you to get this done.”

He’s giving me the floor so to speak. He wants the club to be looking at me, and not him. He might not be saying it, but we both know it’s what he means.

“I’ll call you once we’re on our way back.”

He slaps me on the shoulder but instead of walking off, he says, “Trust in the brothers. You can’t enact your plan by yourself. They know what they’re doing. You do your part, they’ll do theirs.”

I nod and as he heads into the house. I call for the brothers to circle around me.

“We all know what we’ve got to do today. It goes without saying but no cuts, nothing that will give you away. Prospect,” I holler, and he steps up in front. “You’ll go with JJ. Prove to us how far you’ll go.”

He tips his chin and I look over at the vans lined up, waiting to go. It’ll take us a couple of hours to get to the city and plant Sparky’s toys and get out without being seen. By the time they get back to Willow’s Peak, it’ll be time for me, Zach, Mase, and Dex to do our part.

“I don’t want any of you taking risks. You stick to the plan, and you get back here. Anyone got any questions?”

Not one brother pipes up. I holler, “Let’s do this!”

Behind me, the front door opens, and I know who’ll be standing there.
