Luka looked at the cakes. Anything other than look into the sexy softness of Eloise’s eyes. This whole attraction thing was something he’d never known before. First at the castle, then as they’d danced at the ball. Yesterday it had threatened to carry him away. Now as he’d stepped into the very centre of her life, the control he’d thought he had was in serious trouble.

He’d sought her out to tell her the paternity test results had arrived. But even their importance had been reduced to nothing. The knowledge he was the baby’s father had pushed him towards her more than just physically. From the second she’d opened the door to him he’d wanted to give in to the sparks igniting between them.

Her lemon-yellow strappy sundress, partially hidden by her apron, had showcased the woman he’d first met. Not the princess-for-the-night woman from the ball. With so much of her soft and pale skin exposed, she’d looked far more tempting than any of the delicacies he was forcing himself to focus on right now.

And when she’d told him he had icing sugar on his lips she’d looked at him the way she had that first night. As if the intimacy of yesterday’s kiss in the park could be repeated.

Would she have kissed him, just now?

The question rose up, demanding an answer. Almost as insistent as his growing libido. He was not used to curbing his needs when he found a woman physically attractive. But if he was honest, Eloise was more than just physically attractive. Whatever was between them, was deeper than lust. But he just wasn’t ready to examine it.

‘I think baking is more than a passion for you.’ He turned to look at her, noticing the flush of heat in her cheeks. Had it been there before?

‘Okay, I confess. I’m a stress baker.’ She shrugged her shoulders apologetically and smiled.

‘You’re stressed?’ He couldn’t imagine why. Very soon she would have nothing to worry about. All her business worries, financial or otherwise, would be over. She’d be his wife and the mother of the next heir of Zadjana, living a life of luxury and would want for nothing.

‘We are in a bit of an unusual situation.’ She looked intently at him. ‘And the test results…’

Suddenly she turned round so fast he didn’t know what was happening. He watched, stunned into silence as she grabbed her oven gloves.

‘The Madeleines. I almost forgot.’

She rushed to a big oven and opened it, allowing the sweet smell to rise out and fill the bakery. ‘Madeleines?’

She placed a tray of small delicate cakes on the counter and again that shy smile slipped across her lips. ‘I baked them for us. They really need to be eaten fresh, so…’

He moved towards her, reaching for the tray, tasting a truce lingering in the delicious smells of the bakery. ‘Right now.’

She slapped his hand away playfully, laughing. ‘They need to cool first, then be dusted with icing sugar.’

This was the kind of domesticity he’d enjoyed as a young boy.
