Grace spent the next few days attending meetings with Amir and his family or Zorhan business associates. In between working with him, she continued pulling together his list of potential wife candidates and developing a plan of attack for securing his choice.

It went slower than she would have liked because the queen also demanded some of Grace’s time each day. She certainly didn’t begrudge that time. She understood how the queen missed the company of her own daughters. And Grace enjoyed the older woman’s company very much, but she needed to finish the personal project for Amir.

However, the closer she got to completion, the more certain she became of a painful fact. She could not continue to work for him. The emotional distress caused by her unrequited love grew by the day now. It had to be the result of his plan to marry. Compiling the list of names hurt. It hurt way more than she had been prepared for and she hadn’t thought it was going to be easy. But it was mental torture of the worst kind. First, creating a profile of the ideal candidate—defining the type of woman she thought the man she loved would be most happy with had shredded an already battered heart. Every requirement she listed that was something she did not possess—such as physical beauty, the right breeding and/or sophistication—made her feel badly about herself. Even worse were the traits she did share with her picture of the ideal woman for Amir. As that list grew, she couldn’t help wishing she could be the candidate. But she lacked what he wanted physically, and without it, no amount of personality and inner depth could compensate.

Especially for Amir, who had said the only compatibility he was concerned about was what they shared in bed.

Then, looking for women who actually met her requirement caused Grace no end of pain. She envied them and that made her feel evil. She could not be so petty, but she was. It destroyed her to realize each of these women had a chance at the life she craved—to be Amir’s wife. Each moment spent creating dossiers on likely candidates brought home what it was going to feel like when Amir was married to another woman as well.

It was going to be hell. And Grace had come to realize that it was not a punishment she was willing to accept, or even capable of withstanding. She had no choice but to leave Amir’s employ and that knowledge was decimating what bit of her sense of well-being remained.

He wasn’t even engaged yet and she was beyond miserable.

The last question remaining was whether she left once she’d given him the list, or if she waited around until he actually got married. Her heart demanded she stay as long as possible, but her brain refused to ignore the way he’d pulled away from their personal relationship lately. Without his friendship, working for him would be untenable. The very heart that grieved at thoughts of her leaving would be demolished if she stayed.
