Amelia had waited up on purpose but the sight of Santos striding into his home still hit her with an unexpected wave of sensation. Emotions fired through her, and her body responded in kind, as though recognising its master. How she hated that.
âAmelia?â He stilled, his eyes sweeping over her in that way he had. âWhat are you doing awake?â
âI want to talk to you.â
He compressed his lips. âWeâve already spoken.â
âItâs not about us.â Hurt lanced her, his easy dismissal making her feel like a nuisance. âItâs Cameron.â
Wariness crept across his features. He moved towards her, pausing a few feet away, a safe distance, but none the less her senses went into overdrive.
âGo on.â
âI get that youâre ignoring me, but if the by-product of that is you ignoring him, not being home the whole time heâs awake, then my being here is completely pointless.â
âI disagree. You being here is meant to help Cameron adjust to life on the island, life in Greece. Youâre doing that.â
âAnd what about helping him adjust to you?â she pushed, her eyes loaded with feeling.
âI told you, my relationship with my son is not your concern.â
âThatâs ridiculous,â she retorted angrily. âHow can you say that?â
âHeâs my son.â
âNot that youâd know it,â she retorted, then wished she hadnât when he took a step backward, as though physically reeling from her comment. She took in a breath, needing to remember how to stay calm when calm was the opposite of how she felt.
âLook, when Iâm not here, youâre going to need to know how to be some kind of father to him. Youâve uprooted him, dragged him across to Greece, and for what? So he can be pampered by people he doesnât know?â
âHe has you.â
She shook her head. âIâm not enough. Youâre his father. And if the reason youâre staying away all day and into the night is because you donât want to see me then Iâll go away again, Santos.â
âDonât threaten me.â
âIâm not threatening you. I will pack my bags and leave tomorrow unless you promise to start spending time with him.â
âItâs not that easy!â His voice was raised and there was something in his features, a sense of panic or disbelief; she couldnât say. He controlled his temper, lowering his voice. âItâs not that easy.â
âItâs not meant to be easy. He didnât choose to lose his mother, and you didnât choose to discover youâre a father to a six-year-old boy, but thatâs the situation.â She held his gaze. âIf the idea of seeing me is so distasteful to youâlike youâre worried Iâm going to throw myself at your feet or somethingâthen donât. Believe me when I tell you, Iâll very happily go to the other side of the island when youâre in the house, if thatâs what it takes.â She glared at him to underscore how serious she was. âJust spend time with your son, Santos. He needs to know you.â
