A personal note to Diane Blair about their shared love of reading.
But Hillary wasn’t having it. “She has about come to the conclusion that no matter what she does [she] is going to piss off some people, so will just continue to be herself and let everybody else make whatever adjustments they have to,” Blair wrote in her notes.
Hillary told Blair that she knew she should be nicer to the press, that she shouldn’t change her hair so much, and that “I know I should pretend not to have any opinions—but I’m just not going to.”
She had compromised over the years, giving up her name and trying to be what others expected. “But I’m not going to try to pretend to be somebody that I’m not. I’m a complex person, and they’re just going to have to live with that,” she told her friend. “Why can’t they just relax about it?”
She also felt unfairly characterized. Bill was outgoing and drew strength from being around others. He relaxed by schmoozing, shaking hands, and talking to people. She -preferred quiet time—reading, hanging out, or watching -movies—which sometimes was described as “brooding” or hiding out to nurse her wounds.
Blair suggested she focus on a couple of key areas where she could make a difference. But Hillary told her the First Lady role meant she could only be an advocate or a cheerleader or a nag—but she didn’t have any real power to bring about change.
