I have climbed El Cerro many times, both at times when people swarm over it like ants on an anthill and at other times when relatively few people are on it (it’s all but impossible to be completely alone on the mountain). I recommend both: on Good Friday, to experience the fervent and durable faith of New Mexico’s mostly Hispanic Catholics, and at quieter times, to experience for oneself the mountain’s potential power.

Yet the story of how El Cerro came to be such a potent symbol of faith is not what many would suspect.
