Yasmine’s face twitches a glare.

She rarely likes when anyone corrects her, let alone a child.

Conversation flows freely between everyone. Yasmine interrogates my past dealings with strange behaviors in creeks, while the kids recall memories, some happy, some not, around their previous experiences near similar bodies of water. They let down their guards for me. For her. They allow their true selves to shine bright rather than hide as they’ve become accustomed to.
