Chapter 13
Carla left the soup to simmer on the stove top and put on the news. Nothing was mentioned about Myrtle Lakeâs murder. Of course, Boston had its own crime to report about. Nobody paid much attention to what happened out here in the boonies. Light rain blew in the wind, pattering the cottage windows. Charlie, Robbie, Jarvis (and Pequod) were out in the weather. Well, there was plenty of chicken and rice soup. Hopefully the mynah wouldnât take offense.
Robbieâs big off-road SUV pulled in the driveway after the weather report. Charlie led them in. âWell, that sucked,â she said.
âIâve got soup on if you want to stay,â Carla said.
Robbie rubbed red hands together. âYâknow, a wee dram of something might take the chill off the bones.â
âYou know where I keep the wee drams, Robbie. Help yourself,â Carla said.
Charlie took off her shoes and looked around the cottage. Looking for Saylor, Carla thought. Well, for the time being, she could keep looking. Speaking of which...
âAre you still going to the drive in with Simon?â
Charlie shook rain out of her red locks. âIn this rain?â
Robbie poured himself a finger of whiskey. At Charlieâs words, he shook his head and made it a double.
âWe saw the tree,â Charlie went on, changing the subject. âIt was chopped up on both sides of the road. I guess Public Works will haul it out eventually.â
âWhat about the man who attacked Glynnis?â Carla got up from the couch and moved into the kitchen. She stacked bowls on the counter. âAny sign of him?â
âLots of tracks on the paths,â Jarvis said. âI guess people have been out, looking for the ghost lights. We found her basket.â
âIâll drop it off to her on the way home,â Robbie said.
âNothing to explain why a woman would get attacked on public land,â Jarvis said.
âWas she on public land?â Carla grabbed the ladle from its magnetic hanger and dished. âMaybe it was a disgruntled owner?â
âShoving her down like that?â Robbie said.
âItâs public land, really just an extension from the state park to the west,â Jarvis said. âIf it wasnât for Myrtle Lake, it would be one big woods.â
âYou all get washed up,â Carla said, bringing a platter with fresh-baked bread to the table. âI think I have some cantaloupe for Pequod.â
Once they were seated and digging in, Robbie said, âWe did run into Jimmy Service while we were out there.â
The Service family owned a farm near the east woods, and had for generations. A large parcel of their land was sold to create Myrtle Lake Retirement Village. âI havenât seen him in a while,â Carla said.
âHe got an offer, just like the others,â Jarvis said. âSome out of town developer. Said he looked âem up on the internet, but couldnât find anything. Said he was tempted. Times have been tough. But he wasnât selling to someone he didnât know.â
âDonât blame him there,â Robbie said.
Pequod jumped off Jarvisâ shoulder to nip at the slice of cantaloupe. âCaâan trust nobody these days,â the bird said.
