CHAPTER TWELVE
In Washington, DC, Tom Harris and Howard Graystone stood in a conference room at the Capitol building, while Investigator Williams, finished setting up the wire taped on Tom’s chest so that they could record the up-coming meeting with Senator Jamison.
Investigator Williams had initially thought, this arrest, and Miss Harris’s reaction, was a setup of some kind, it was just too convenient. She had been investigating the DeLuca family for five years. Through this period, there had never been any sign that the DeLuca family was working in Mexico with the Basara Cartel. After checking with the FBI office in Arizona who worked the border, they informed her that they also had never heard of the two crime families working together. Something didn’t quite feel right. Two days earlier, Investigator Williams, after a lengthy questioning of a witness on another case, walked out of the front of the FBI building to get a street taco from the Taco Truck around the corner. Rounding the corner, she saw her partner, Investigator Scranton, accepting a black leather bag from Senator Jamison himself, which she assumed was full of cash. Investigator Williams, witnessing this, backed up, behind the corner so that the Senator and her partner wouldn’t catch her standing there. After getting over the initial shock, Investigator Williams was beyond angry. The problem was she didn’t know how to prove it.
Investigator Williams had called Tom Harris. She wanted to hear where he stood on the case, too see if it would lead her to any new clues that would help prove her strategy that something felt seriously off about this case. That is when she not only found out his daughter Amelia had gone missing, but that Tom Harris had called Investigator Scranton personally informing him that Amelia had been kidnapped and believed the Basara Cartel was behind it. Funny, Scranton, her partner, had never told her of this new development. She decided then and there to trust Tom Harris enough to share her doubt about her partner and that she thought he might be involved in setting Amelia up for smuggling. For the next hour, they discussed a plan to set the Senator and her partner up for a fall.
Investigator Williams asked Tom to say something, so she could be sure to hear his voice through her headset. “Your all set, Tom. Now, remember, let the Senator know Amelia is missing, and how worried you are. Howard, then I want you to accuse him of working with the Basara family and make the connection with my partner Scranton. Howard looked impatiently at Investigator Williams, “I know how to handle this meeting, Miss Williams. Your job is to stay in this conference room, no matter what you hear, and record this conversation. Have your agent’s ready to move in and arrest that son of a bitch.”
Investigator Williams lips pressed together in a slight grimace, before saying, “Mr. Graystone is there something more you would like to share about this meeting? What do
