Chapter Ten
Even after all those years, Mrs. Blair was just as sassy as ever. That was why heâd gotten along with her so well. She hadnât treated him as a child. More as an equal. Sheâd made his high school years much more tolerable.
Matt led the way out to Aubreyâs Jeep and held the door while she climbed in.
Aubrey waited until he got in before she said, âSo, you werenât such a bad boy as you thought you were back in high school, were you?â She shot him a look, cocking an eyebrow.
âI was bad enough to keep people at a distance, if I wanted to.â He grinned. âAnd donât let olâ Mrs. Blair fool you. She was no saint. Her opinions were radical. She just didnât share them with many.â
âAnd she shared them with you?â
He nodded. âOften. We had many a debate, after school.â
âAre we going to check out the places she suggested?â Aubrey asked, shifting the Jeep into gear.
âWe can bring it up to the sheriff. I donât feel comfortable poking around abandoned buildings with you when the guys who shot up your place might be there with fully loaded semiautomatic weapons.â
âYou have a good point.â Aubrey shivered. âI donât know how you military guys can go into battle with bullets flying all around you.â
âWe did what we had to,â Matt said, staring out the front windshield, images of past battles flooding his memories. âWe didnât have anyone else to go in for us.â
âI donât know why we didnât think of Mr. Morrison when he ran into us at the diner.â
Mattâs lip curled. âIt was all I could do to tolerate him for more than the minute he interrupted our breakfast.â
âHe is a bit pushy,â Aubrey said. âDo you think heâd heard about the trouble at your motherâs house?â
âItâs hard to say. He didnât mention it, but why single you out today, of all days?â
âSeems strange.â Aubrey pulled out onto the highway and drove toward town. âThatâs the first time heâs approached me since I came to Whiskey Gulch.â
âHis timing could be lousy, or he knew about the attack this morning, but didnât say anything.â Matt pulled out his cell phone and keyed a text message to Sheriff Richards.
âWho are you texting?â Aubrey asked.
âThe sheriff. Iâm passing on the sites Mrs. Blair suggested.â
âGood. Iâd rather he went out there with his deputies than us.â
After heâd sent the message, his cell phone vibrated in his hand. Surely, the sheriff hadnât responded so quickly. He checked the incoming messages.
He had a cryptic note from Juan Salazar.
Old barn Glen and Hatcher Road junction fifteen minutes
âWhat is it?â Aubrey asked.
âMessage from Juan. He wants us to go to the old barn at the junction of Glen and Hatcher Road.â
Aubrey shook her head. âI donât know where that is.â
âThe turnoff for Hatcher is about a mile before you get to town.â
âTell me when we get close.â She leaned toward the steering wheel, staring closely at the road in front of her, a frown denting her brow.
