CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

M smiled as the scene came into focus in his powerful binoculars. Sharp. Crystal clear. Better than real life. He'd picked the perfect vantage point here. He was hidden behind scrub, up the side of the mountain, with the valley spread out before him.

He could see a woman going into her cabin. Tall, slender, confident. A ray of sunshine briefly pierced the gathering clouds, highlighting her pale, shining hair and the sparkle of jewelry at her throat.

She looked to be in her late forties, with a compact body and wide, expressive eyes and he closed in on her face. Surprisingly, there wasn’t the sour, evil expression he’d expected to see. Instead, she was smiling.

Lowering the binoculars, he checked his environment. The forest was quiet now. He’d heard voices earlier but nobody had come close to his secluded spot.

He saw nothing that would stop him. Relishing the opportunity, he raised the binoculars again and took another look at the woman, watching her as she walked past the cabin’s open door. If she turned on the lights, it would be like viewing somebody on stage. He was patient and could wait.

Methodical.

Mindful.

He smiled. He'd see her every move from here, whether she was in a room or at the window. And all the while she'd be unaware of his presence.

He flicked open his case, revealing the knife with its crude, warped blade. He took it out, stroking the steel with his finger, being careful because it was very sharp.

Returning his focus to the cabin, he saw the woman's eyes narrow and she turned to glance over her shoulder, as if somehow sensing something was out of place. Or perhaps someone inside was calling to her. For a strange moment he wondered if she was being warned about him.

But M knew there was nothing to be afraid of. He need not be paranoid. He was hidden away here, and was just a watcher. A spectator.

He frowned, as the memories returned. He'd been treated unfairly. He'd been labeled a stalker. They had called him a peeping Tom, these rich folk who held their privacy around them like it was some kind of personal right.

He felt the anger burn and fester. How unfairly they had treated him! He was going to make them pay again and again for what they had done.

Swinging the binoculars around, he focused on another part of the ranch, watching two guests arrive.

They were laughing and joking, happy. Well, why wouldn't they be, so shielded from reality by their immense wealth?

He watched, narrowing his eyes as they strode past one of the housemaids without even looking in her direction. They didn't see her, it was as if she didn't exist in their world.

Like the woman he had watched earlier, this couple was dressed in expensive clothes.

He focused on them, watching the man's face, seeing in his eyes the superiority he'd expected to find.

The anger burned within him. He hoped they would decide to go out on the trails. Not both of them, of course.
