Fortunately, Lodi Brown had an uneventful stay at San Quentin. In early 1878, he petitioned Governor Irwin to be pardoned from his sentence. Accompanying the petition were various letters from family and close friends declaring that “he is a nice boy,” “he was young at the time, only 20 years,” etc. Word of Brown’s bid for freedom reached northern Sonoma and southern Mendocino Counties. Letters and petitions with 1,250 signatures in opposition to such an event were submitted to the governor. Wells Fargo sent letters to Irwin adamantly against any release whatsoever:

From early youth Brown was a reckless, violent and lawless character, strong willed and quick minded with the capacity and resolution, as well as the disposition to carry out the promptings of a depraved nature.…

Previous to attaining his fourteenth year he shot at a man upon a race course, and in an altercation a year or two afterward, stabbed another man.
