Chapter 11

Waking up. The process has become pretty basic over the last year. It consisted of reluctantly opening my eyes to reveal the same four walls of the same bedroom. Then, after much procrastination, I would get up and make some coffee, the kitchen usually still quiet and dark. At some point, when I was sure no one was around to watch me, I would pop a couple of pain relievers. Every other day Charlie would come bursting into the house to sit with me for a bit before heading into work, occasionally earning the wrath of a sleepy Eva. That is what my life had become.

Mundane. Repetitive. Predictable.

Now all of that has gone flying out the window and I can’t decide if I’m happy about it or not. Yesterday my answer would have been explicitly unhappy. Of course, yesterday I had been in pain and very confused. But right at this particular moment? There is a very definite tilt of the scales in favor of happy. And not just because there is a massive werewolf warrior cuddled up against my back, his breath coming out in heated wisps against the nape of my neck.

Now, what I should do is hastily extract myself from his grasp and try to pretend this never happened. The only thing is that, for the first time in a long time, I feel really good. It has nothing to do with Egan, though waking up to him holding me is surprisingly nice. No, the good feeling is just due to the fact that I don’t feel bad. The familiar nausea and headaches I have become so accustomed to experiencing from the moment I wake up to the moment I fall asleep are both suspiciously absent.

I shift a little bit, testing to see if maybe I’m just imagining it, but nothing changes. Well, something does change; it’s just not the something that I had been expecting.

“Go back to sleep,” Egan mumbles groggily into my ear, pulling me tighter against his chest. Instead of obeying him, I wiggle until he lets out a grunt, loosening his grip on me enough to allow me to roll over and face him. “I take it we’re not going back to sleep then?” he asks, his tone flat and his voice raspy from sleep.

“What time is it?” I ask, giving him an answer. I’m pretty sure that it was rhetorical anyway.

I can tell from the predawn light coming through the pint size basement windows that it must be early morning, but it’s hard to be sure. I straighten my glasses and push up a little in an attempt to take in the rest of the room, but with such a small amount of light I’m not able to see much. Luckily the soft snores coming from behind Egan confirm that we aren’t alone. I wonder if everyone crashed during the second movie? Must have been really boring, which means I didn’t miss out on much.

Reaching into the back pocket of his jeans, Egan pulls out his cell phone.
