“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” said Jackie as we hurried through the parking lot and its dusting of snow to the entrance of the convention center, dressed in rags, torn jeans, and our faces painted to the point where we really did look as though we had rotting flesh falling from our bodies.
“You conned me into joining a beauty pageant last July,” I replied.
“That was different. We were trying to solve a murder.”
“And what do you think we are doing now?”
Jackie grumbled, mumbling something about payback being a bitch, but I knew she didn’t mind dressing up like this. It was an excuse to get out of the apartment and do something fun.
We strolled through the double doors of the convention center, which had been dressed up to look like one was about to pass into the underworld with fake entrails hanging from the glass, complete with smeared blood and disembodied limbs. The doors creaked as we opened them and one of the fake intestines smacked me on the face, but I ignored as the amount of people standing in front of me dressed like the undead, just like Jackie and me, caught me off-guard. From wall to wall “zombies” meandered through the building, laughing, joking, and carrying on conversations about the day’s events.
“Perhaps we should follow them,” I suggested, pointing at a line of convention goers heading into a banquet room.
Jackie agreed and we fell in line with a group of people who were either dressed like zombies or sported a pair of worn out jeans and tattered shirts, carrying fake axes and machetes. It seemed that some preferred to dress up as zombie hunters, while most wanted to pretend to be an animated corpse.
A snarling noise sounded in my ear and I jumped, forgetting that I was surrounded by zombie enthusiasts as I was reminded of the night before and the scare that I had received thinking that the apocalypse had come into fruition.
“Sorry,” apologized the man behind me, while holding onto his girlfriend. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“No worries,” I replied.
“Is this your first time here?”
“Yes,” I said. “We heard about this event and thought that we would come out for a night of fun.”
“No better way to do it,” replied the girlfriend.
A thought entered my mind. “This is quite an event for first time organizers.”
“First time?” said the man. “Keri and Ian have been organizing events like these for a few years now. They do try to keep it where only those who are zombie enthusiasts like us know about them, but we are always looking for new participants.”
“Oh,” I said, “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I thought that they had never organized an event like this before.”
“That’s because you’re probably thinking of Malcolm,” said the girlfriend.
“Malcolm?” I asked, elated that they knew the murder victim.
“Yeah,” continued the girlfriend, “he used to be the one that organized all this with Keri. Ian always stayed in the background. I heard he went missing.
