I thought I’d have a tough time falling asleep, but to my surprise I was out like a light almost as soon as my head hit the pillow. I also guessed I’d have plenty of weird dreams and nightmares to fill my sleep, but I woke up eight hours later with no memory of either.

“Look who’s finally up!” Callie purred from the window.

I blinked at her, rubbed sleep from eyes and swung my feet out of bed. It’s only eight in the morning,” I said after glancing at the alarm clock.

She shrugged. “Just joking around. Why is everyone sleeping over, anyway?”

It took a second to remember, but then it came back, like a sharp pang of unease at the pit of my stomach. “Long story short, this crazy puppet wizard might be trying to enslave the town.”

“That explains why all the people are acting so weird then,” she said. “I was out with Mousington last night and we ran into some real oddballs.”

“They must have been odd if the talking cat and animated mouse teddy thought so.”

“Ha, ha,” she said in a deadpan manner.

“Where is Mousington, anyway?”

Callie rolled her eyes. “Little Lord Mousington is still out on the town. I took him out to show him off to all my familiar friends, and he was an instant hit. Only problem is that he’s too much of a hit. Everyone loves Mousington, he’s the life and soul of the party, and he’s already nudged his way into social circles that I’ve been trying to crack for years!”

“Oh dear… are you alright?” I asked. Although this situation was obviously different from my own experiences, I’d had this sort of problem before. It was always difficult when friendships changed or grew apart. My best friend in high school came back one summer with a completely different look, and she decided she was too cool to hang with me anymore. After that she fell in with the cool kids, and we never really hung out again.

“I’m fine,” Callie said, turning her nose up at the question. “Why wouldn’t I be? They’ll get tired of him soon. It’s just novelty. And then he’ll come crawling back. You’ll see!”

“Uh huh… sure.” I grinned, trying my best to show that I thought the same, even though I didn’t.

I showered quickly and came back to the bedroom to get dressed with the aid of my Aunt Delilah’s magic wardrobe. Delilah had been something of a shopaholic back when she was alive, and she had pretty great taste in clothes. Fortunately for me most of them fit me pretty well too, though my butt was a tad bit bigger than hers.

“What kind of look are we after today, darling?” the wardrobe asked.

“I need an outfit that is stylish but also flexible. There’s a chance I’ll be dealing with an army of evil marionette puppets, so I need to try and quash that before it gets any worse.”

“I think I have just the thing. Hold on tight!”

The doors flapped closed and opened a second later.
