CHAPTER SIX

North London, England

Hettie’s family’s bomb shelter

Monday, October 7, 1940

I rushed into the red-tinged darkness of the night. Planes roared above me.

Dad was already climbing over the waist-high fence that separated our properties. I did the same.

“Judy!” I called again. A response didn’t come.

I knew she’d been inside her shelter with her parents. We’d waved over the fence as we went inside a few hours ago.

My eyes were fully adjusted to the darkness. I saw the lump that once was her shelter. The middle had caved in. There was no longer a door. I ran toward the lump and began to dig into the dirt and rubble with my bare hands where the door should’ve been. Oliver was soon beside me.

“It wasn’t a direct hit,” Dad said. “Thank God. But I need to hurry. Step aside, Hettie.” He had a shovel. He sunk it into the ground, using his boot to push it deeper. He heaved the dirt away.

I retrieved a second shovel from Judy’s shed. Together, we heaved.

We heaved for what felt like hours. The entire time, I heard no screams or shouts or even cries.

But then, as Dad cleared enough where the entrance to the shelter was visible, I heard moans. “Stay here,” he told Oliver and me.

It was so hard to obey. But I did. Dad disappeared into the collapsed shelter. He returned with Judy behind him first.

“Judy!” I rushed toward her. By the time I reached my friend, I had already wiggled free of my coat. “Here.” I put my jacket around her. “Lean on me.”
