Chapter 12

Breanna

“Cole, you’re scaring me,” I whispered to him, my gaze following his to see a massive man coming toward us. Besides his size there wasn’t anything unusual about him, nothing that I could see that would warrant the deer in the headlights look Cole was giving him.

I looked back at the man approaching and then to Cole. “Cole?” I gave his arm a little harder shake.

“Lincoln, that you?” the man said once he was within ten feet of us. His voice seemed to pull Cole from his hypnotic state.

“Franklin. Well, been a long time,” he replied, taking a few steps forward and meeting the other man halfway, extending his hand.

His outstretched hand was accepted to quickly turn into a hug, the other man saying something to Cole, but his voice was so low I couldn’t make out the words.

This was strange…

First, he acts like he’d seen a ghost, yet it turns out they’re buddies?

Perplexed, I stood back watching their exchange. The other man had a ball cap pulled down covering most of his eyes. His attire of a plain T-shirt and jeans gave away nothing.

“How’ve you been, brother? Heard you got yourself into a little trouble.”

Cole shrugged, heaving a loud sigh. “Wrong place, wrong time, I guess. You know how it can be. Would have preferred at least a few days of civilian life before being caged again, but we don’t always get what we hope for.”

“Amen, to that, brother. What are you up to now?” he nodded toward me. “And who’s the little woman? Looks like the clink didn’t slow you down at all.”

Cole looked over his shoulder at me, but didn’t motion for me to join his side, so I stayed where I was. “She’s been a lifeline for sure.”

I smiled weakly. “Pleased to meet you.”

He smiled at me, lifting his head enough that I could see his dark eyes. He didn’t look intimidating or menacing, but the rigidness of Cole’s stance and tone made me think there was something about the other man that he’d prefer to steer far away from.

“Yourself as well.” He stepped toward me extending his hand.

With a quick glance to Cole, who didn’t seem inclined to give me any indication of what to do next, I took his hand and snatched it away after a quick shake. “How do you know Cole?”

“We served together. Long time ago, or at least it feels like that.”

“Except when it doesn’t,” Cole cut in.

I didn’t need further information to know what Cole meant. I heard him wake up most nights in a cold sweat. Periodically the waking up would include screaming. He never described the dreams or went into detail. Refused to talk about it. All I knew was that they had something to do with his time in the service.

The man before me took a step back and focused his attention back onto Cole. “So what are you doing nowadays?”

“I’m bartending. Pays the bills.”

“Sure. But don’t you miss it?”

“No. I don’t. I’m happy to have that part of my life done and over with.
