Chapter Fourteen

Only two days before Christmas, Grizzly Ridge was a hive of activity and Bree was completely satisfied to be wrapped up in all of the festive fun. Besides the baking, present wrapping, and final preparations, there were two newborn babies to cuddle and a very cranky, teething baby Lily who wouldn’t let her poor mother put her down for more than ten minutes at a time.

“Are you sure you don’t mind, Bree?” Harper asked for the dozenth time in the last few minutes as she paced the floor with baby Lily, who, for the moment, was satisfied to suck on a cold teething ring. “I mean, it’s so last minute and—”

“I told you,” Bree interrupted with a smile. “I’m happy to do it. I only wished I had thought of it earlier.”

Watching Harper earlier that morning trying to juggle the baby while stirring up dough for a fresh batch of cookies, Bree was struck with inspiration that had her pulling her sewing machine out.

If the baby wouldn’t let her mother put her down long enough for Harper to get anything done, Bree could fix that by sewing up a baby-wearing sling for Harper.

“It’s actually going to be pretty easy,” Bree said. “I’m just glad I thought to grab my sewing machine when Liam took me down into town yesterday.” He hadn’t wanted her to go back to town at all, claiming it would be safer for her at the ridge until they knew more about her family, but Bree had insisted. She loved it at Grizzly Ridge, but she still had a shop to worry about down in town. Besides, she’d wanted to find a little something for a Christmas present for Liam. Not that she’d been all that successful on that front. Not with him standing guard everywhere she went. But she did have one idea that she hoped he would like.

In the meantime, she had to whip up the sling to give Harper some relief from her demanding baby. “I’m so glad this tablecloth is big enough.” Harper laughed and shook her head at the huge piece of fabric decorated with wreaths and candy canes that she’d found in a back cupboard. “I guess if we open the doors to guests next Christmas, I’ll have to replace it. But it’ll be worth it, if it works.”

“It will.” Bree nodded and got back to work cutting the fabric into a long strip. “It’ll only be a few minutes.”

She turned back to her sewing.

“Do you think this was all a mistake?” Harper said after a moment.

“A mistake?” Bree lifted her head briefly. “What exactly are you talking about?”

“This.” Harper sounded close to tears. “Christmas. The Reindeer Games. A big dinner. Just…all of it.” Her friend’s voice shook.

Bree finished pinning the two pieces of fabric together and watched Harper as she stopped pacing in front of the Christmas tree.

She looked up and took it all in before turning back to Bree. “I think it might have been a mistake.”

“No.” Bree shook her head and offered Harper a small smile.
