Luro hugged Goblo. ‘I’m so glad you’re safe.’

Quizmal stroked Goblo’s head.

Karl kept an eye on Rimala. She stared at Goblo.

He removed the bandage from around his head. ‘Once you get your water from the feathered devil let’s find a way out of here.’ Karl glanced around. ‘I have no idea which way is out, but we’ll find it. As long as we stick together.’ He locked eyes with Rimala.

‘Toilet,’ Goblo said and reached for Karl’s hand.

‘Don’t even think about it!’ Karl stepped back.

‘Sword.’ Goblo jumped up and down.

Karl’s companions were equally confused. Karl reluctantly handed Goblo his sword.

She swayed with its weight and dropped it into the leaves, then disappeared under them. She strained and groaned.

Rimala huffed and turned away.

Karl turned to Freyu. ‘She’s using my sword as a toilet bucket, isn’t she?’

Quizmal chuckled.

Goblo popped her head out of the leaves, a huge grin on her face. ‘Hand.’

‘Not a chance,’ Karl said.

Goblo whined. ‘Hand!’

Quizmal offered his hand.

Goblo pulled it down into the leaves and Quizmal rose with the sword outstretched. Goblo’s dung decorated the blade.

Luro winced.

Karl’s stomach turned with disgust while his heart filled with hope. Three of the worm-like creatures glowed on top of Goblo’s waste. They moved, all faced the north-west and stood on their tails. Their faces glowed brighter than their bodies.

Everyone gathered around and stared, then shuffled back as the smell reached them.

‘Are they telling us where to go?’ Quizmal asked.

Karl nodded and swallowed the relief. ‘I think so.’ He took the sword from Quizmal and moved it. The worms turned again, towards the north-west. Karl smiled at Goblo. ‘You knew?’

Goblo grinned. ‘Clever.’

Karl chuckled. ‘Can you get them out of your dung now?’ He lowered the blade towards her.

Goblo laughed, stopped laughing, then hid in the leaves.

Karl turned to his allies, who all stepped away from the dung. ‘Come on!’

Luro shook her head and Quizmal stepped further back.

Karl huffed. ‘Can one of you at least hold the sword?’

Freyu stepped forward and took the grip from Karl, holding it as far away from herself as possible.

Desperate to avoid the dung, Karl pinched the yellow creature, but dung caught under his fingernails.

He groaned and dropped the creature onto his palm, then pinched the red and blue ones.

He retched. ‘Goblo, we need to discuss your diet.’

Freyu swung the sword, flinging the dung into the distance.

The creatures turned on Karl’s palm and faced the north-west again. ‘This is amazing.’

Leaves blew and Arazod descended. ‘Your water.’ He kept his distance and tossed the waterskins to Luro, Quizmal, Freyu, and then Rimala.

Karl’s light heart suddenly weighed more than a castle.

‘Am I thankful?’ Quizmal asked Arazod.

‘I don’t know,’ Arazod replied. ‘Are you?’

‘Am I?’ Quizmal asked.

Arazod’s beak twitched.

Freyu stepped forward. ‘Thanks for the water. But our friend doesn’t want you here. If you follow us, it won’t just be him who tries to kill you. I’m sorry.’ Freyu stood next to Karl.

Quizmal shook his head and joined Karl, as did the others, apart from Rimala who stayed where she was.

Arazod nodded and scratched his neck feathers.
