It had been centuries since Finn had to buy a present for a teenage girl. While Oisína had always loved his gifts, Finn doubted Bree would want a goat or a woolen shawl. So, his hands shook when he passed Bree the velvet sack of fairy stones over the table. The teenager dug inside the bag and pulled a stone out in front of her cheerful smile and bright eyes.

Pavlina frowned at Finn. “Did you really just give my kid a portal creator?”

Finn held up his hands defensively. “What? They’re duds. She’d need a pretty powerful source and a circuit to make these work.”

“Did you get these from Scandinavia or Greenland?” Bree asked.

Finn shook his head. “I got these near Grandfather Mountain around the time I settled into that area of the world, before the Great War.”

Pavlina, ever the history teacher, tapped her chin and said, “Ah, yes, that makes sense. There was a huge Scottish and Irish migration to the Blue Ridge in North Carolina. You must have come with them.”

Liz, who sat next to Bree on the other side of the table, threw up a hand, and her eyes widened. “Pizza!”

Finn turned to see their server carrying one loaded vegetable pizza and one Margherita pizza. Putting vegetables on pizza is heretical. The server set the pies on their table and walked away after Pavlina assured him they had all they needed.

Liz swiped the first slice of Margherita pizza before Finn had a chance.

“When are you going to give up this Buddhist vegetarian thing, Bree?” the younger girl asked, still chewing the cheesy bite in her mouth. “I miss pepperoni.”

Bree rolled her eyes. “Never. That’s when. That pixie dissection really opened my eyes.” She gave Finn a sidelong glance.

“Hey, now,” Finn said. “Those pixies died of natural causes.” Bree lifted an eyebrow in response. “Still, I think I’ll use a virtual dissection next year like Ms. Sirin showed me.”

Finn looked at the Magical History teacher, and his heart hummed as he witnessed a pink blush form below her lowered lashes and above her subtle smile. He wanted to kiss that rosy bloom, but he couldn’t do that to her, even if she asked. After all that she had lost with her husband, he couldn’t make a claim for her heart when he might soon disappear from her life forever.

Guilt consumed him as he watched Bree scarf down a slice of pizza while giggling with her little sister. The Council of Pantheons hadn’t contacted him yet, and somehow that made everything worse. Just how much do they expect me to control her? Bree had only turned fifteen that morning, but the CoP sounded like they had plans that would age her before her time. Just like Oisína, all those centuries ago.

They finished their dinner, and Finn had to admit the pizza was excellent, even without any meat. A moment later, they stepped through the entrance to Sunray Cinema, which overwhelmed him with its over-the-top decorations. A giant, white moth on the wall caught his attention first.
