END-OF-CHAPTER

Chapter Twelve

"You fellas are welcome to dinner," Eldon shouted over the noise of the hopper as we approached the king's castle that night.

"No thanks, El," John answered, already on a first name basis with the pilot. "Denali and I have to talk."

"Found something, did you?"

John only smiled.

Eldon called in his ETA to the castle. On the landing pad roof, orange lights forming a star came on.

"Here we go," said Eldon as the hopper bucked upwards when we hit the updraft, then began slipping from side to side. Eldon nudged his flight stick forward, moved his free hand over the green-lit control panel. "Come on, come on," he whispered fiercely as the hopper began to descend falling, nose coming up gently until we touched down on the landing pad with a light bump. "Still a lot of food in the pot," Eldon shouted over the whine of the rotor blades overhead winding down.

"Some other time, El. Give Lei a call," John answered as we climbed out. While I was still getting my land legs, John punched my shoulder and ran laughing toward the door that led down to the lift. I raced after him and almost caught him, but he got to the door first, opened it and raced down the stairwell, me at his heels. In the hall near the lift we found Lei waiting for us, so we ran a lap around her for good measure.

"Do I get a kiss for winning my race against Denali?"

John asked.

"I need one more, I lost," I protested.

"I don't know what to do. How many more are coming?" Lei asked, fluttering her eyelids.

"Two kisses would be better for the winner," put in John.

"Three for me, then," I cried.

"I have it! I have it!" beamed Lei; and she gave each of us a firm handshake.

"How did you know we'd be here?" I asked after I had received my prize.

"I called Jang. Did you know he once entered a contest at Obie-Wun? And he talked the king into asking you to come here, John. He read about you, and did some checking on you."

"Emmm," answered John, his eyes clouding as he considered that.

"Tell Lei what you found out," I prompted.

"Did you find something?"

"Am I not a Hero?" John asked, looking up with a smile and swelling his chest, then his cheeks, until Lei began chasing him around the hallway until she could press his cheeks down; and John let all the air in his chest out until his stomach was much larger than his chest, and we all laughed.

"I have found the key!" he announced.

"It was in his back pocket," I said.

"I have found the key!" John repeated, more dramatically, holding his hands heavenward, his gaze focused on some distant key. "Denali and I are going now to see the king. Come, my radiant beauty," John said to Lei, taking her hand and kissing it, going in little jumps up her arm to her shoulder, across the back of her neck and down her other arm.
