Chapter 21 – Alien Analysis

Psystar’s Viewpoint

I woke … again. This time, I came to prior to opening my eyes and looking around, and I remembered to stay as still as possible. There were now two mindviews in range … that of Duff, and someone else with a black mindview, which generally meant that they were sleeping or unconscious. As the person wasn’t dreaming or thinking of anything, I assumed that they were unconscious.

Duff floated in what appeared to be a bridge, or command center. I pulled his mindview close to fill my vision. It was difficult not using my hands. I wasn’t sure why I had the crutch of gesturing for some of my mental actions, but it was much easier to do things when I did so.

The bridge reminded me somewhat of many science fiction shows, with sleek curved panels that had built-in black consoles, and computer screens everywhere. The armored men in the room moved very little, though the screens changed in front of them. I gathered that their helmets either had vocal controls inside them, yet didn’t allow the sound to be heard outside the helmet, or they contained a mechanism to allow them to control the computers via thought and eye movement.

It was strange looking through Duff’s mindview, as it was split into five parts, where everyone else had just one thing they looked at, apart from his siblings with numerous eyes, of course. As was his norm, Duff’s eyes looked all around the room at the same time, giving me a good view of the alien room.

Markings here and there were definitely in the Taranus language. I wondered if Tiriffa knew of this new alien threat when she decided to have a group of us learn the language. I wished that the boys had had time to learn the language as well, though.

I focused and thought to Duff, Hi Duff, stay quiet please … this is Psystar. Can you think things to say to me instead of saying them aloud?

Duff’s eyes spun around the room in search of me, although he now saw a glowing, ghostly image of my face in front of him. I felt his confusion at seeing me now, but not having spotted me approach. He thought very slowly, Arr. Hi Star.

He waved at my ghostly face, and I had a difficult time not smiling. Hey sweetie, can you find something that shows where we are at?

Arr. He floated forward until he was in front of several screens, as well as the large viewscreen. We appeared to be over Metrocity, on the west side.

Did Rayna send you to find me?

Dunno.

That surprised me. Do they know where we’re at?

Dunno.

He wasn’t helping much. Can you fly around the ship and look around each room?

Arr. He spun and floated to the door, waving at one of two armored men standing guard by the open doorway. I wondered why I wasn’t picking up mindviews off these people.

He moved toward a door that was closed, and I thought, No, don’t push any buttons.
